You are not your addiction!

To all the guys here who are still struggling with a PMO addiction just remember a few things:

    1. You are not your past. What you did in the past is done. You can't change it. But you can determine your future.

    2. You are not your addiction. There is so much more to you than your addiction, and once you begin your recovery and replace that void with positive energy you will feel a lot more fulfillment and happiness in life.

    3. You cannot get enough of what does not fulfill you. That's the problem with addictions. You can never get enough because it's completely empty. Real intimacy with a woman will fill you. Relationships will fill you. Porn will not.

Anyways, I just thought I would share some of these thoughts I had with you.

Thanks. And yes, you are your mind but you are not defined by your addiction. There is so much more to you than that. Addiction is just a temporary coping mechanism we use to deal with our unmet needs.

I like that, that's really eye-opening. Porn gives you nothing, therefore overloading on porn is just overloading on nothing, you'll never feel like you've had enough.

ahm, no, you still don't get it. there's a deep meaning behind the words "you are not your mind". I repeat, to make sure everyone get is, you are not your mind.

Yes and it's been incredibly instrumental in my recovery. I'm almost on 30 days now with no PMO- by far the longest I've gone since childhood.

    Joelski, you are absolutely right.

I'm reading that book, thanks to LTE! I'd make a thread on it, but I'm only on chapter 5 or so. Lots of worthwhile exercises to get to the root of this. I believe it's instrumental in overcoming addictions of any sort. Time to start a book discussion anyone? Everyone who is stuck in the relapsing cycle needs to read this book.

Guys it's a great book. I have tried to stop this addiction for 17 years and it's only after reading it that I've made any real progress.

I went to the library and read it there one Saturday. Then I went back and read it a couple more times.

It is a good book. The locating and facing your addict voice in the amphitheatre is a great, simple and effective technique. It really helped me get past the 10-12 day hurdle I always fall at.

Also as he was a sex addict himself, he offers a profound understanding of how hard it is to 'break the cycle'.

my recent discovery from the book so far has been the miss understanding the word "intimacy" and how this has lead me to a very long cycle of chasing sex to get intimacy
