What exactly do you mean by PMO? [Important]

    Hello everyone.

I've noticed people using the abbreviation PMO in different ways.

I have to admit I get a little annoyed by this sometimes.

The two most common uses of PMO are:

    1) PMO = porn, masturbation, orgasm
    2) PMO = masturbating to porn

I personally use definition #1, which means that if I'm abstaining from PMO then I'm abstaining from porn, masturbation, and orgasm. In other words, I'm abstaining from any sexual release of any kind. To me, no PMO means complete abstinence.

If I want to stay away from porn and masturbation (but not sex), then I'll say I'm abstaining from PM.

And if I only want to abstain from porn, then I'll say I'm abstaining from P.

However, I've seen people post things like "I'm on day 17 of no PMO and day 5 of no MO" and it confuses the hell out of me.

Isn't it easier to say "I'm on day 17 of no P and day 5 of no M" instead?

The way I've been using it is:

PMO=using Porn to Masturbate to Orgasm. In other words, it is the combination of them that I am specifically referring to. So, if I'm abstaining from PMO, that means I am not necessarily not MO'ing, or O'ing.

To be honest, I think people should just use the English words and explain what the fuck they are doing, so nobody gets confused. If you know how to type, it's not that much more difficult to type out the extra "orn", etc.

    I use definition #1.

I've always seen it as #2 (a combination of P and M which results in O).

I use definition #1. I am trying to be PMO free, therefore there will be no porn, masturbation, or orgasm for an indefinite period of time. For me, it is sex or nothing.

For me it's pretty much #2. Because like Eternity said, masturbating to porn leads to orgasm.

Let me weigh in on this topic.

When I use PMO, I am specifically referring to my ritualistic, compulsive masturbation using porn to the point of orgasm. Since I am married and having fairly regular sexual relations with my wife, I am not orgasm free, nor do I wish to be. My main issue is jerking off to porn for hours on end in an ever escalating pattern= PMO. I understand the downsides of M and O during a reboot and I have fairly successfully refrained from both P and M (with only one "minor" slip on first Day 9).

So, I have to agree with those who use PMO to designate the toxic combination of all three together. The other thing I'd mention is that PMO is better for me than using the actual terms, especially masturbation. Thinking about "M" as "masturbating," yes, the word, can sometimes be a trigger for me, so the abbreviation is really good. (We all know what we are talking about here--at least now that we've cleared that up!) ;)

It's definition 1. On YBOP and Gary's posts here he makes it clear that you need to give up all three or a decent period of time to reboot. I always found that confusing here too, when people say they've been without PMO but still are masturbating to orgasm

For me it's originally definition 1. But after my slip on day 14, I needed some way keep count because I did not slip to porn and it became definition 2. Hence my day x of no pmo/day y no mo format.

Just to clarify, YBOP is referring to porn-induced ED. We also say that some guys (usually older) can heal from porn-induced ED in a reasonable time, while still having occasional orgasm.

As someone who is constantly being asked questions, I really wish guys would be clear. I've always assume PMO means Orgasm also - no matter how it is achieved.

I actually think I've figured out the answer to this. There are two senses in which this term is used, both as a goal (noun) and an activity (verb or derived from one).

PMO as goal=no porn, no masturbation, and no orgasm (or any combination thereof). There are plenty of people for whom this is not their goal, for instance those who are in relationships and have sex with their partners. This slows down the reboot, as people have noted.

PMO as activity=masturbating to porn (not masturbating to orgasm, which is always specified as MO, or just having an orgasm which is specified as O, etc.).

You can usually tell quite clearly from the context what the person writing means.
