    Hi,

I´ve been having problems with several addiction ever since my early teenager years. Now I´m in my mid-twenties and I´m struggling with my porn addiction.

After intense use of porn for about 5 years i realised that i was an addict like 18 months ago. With strong will I managed to get away from it and didn´t watch any porn for about 14 months.
The problem is that I probably was more addicted to porn than most others who have to deal with this problem. Porn used to rule really every part of my life. That means that my brain still has not come back to normal, I´m having severe withdrawal symptoms 24/7. Though I didn´t use any porn at all porn still ruled/rules my brain.

Instead of just ignoring porn I want to try a new healing method hoping to heal my brain more quickly. As I am not sure if my idea is good I would like to hear your opinion!
What I´ve been doing the last weeks is to consiously look at porn. My brain still reacts to porn like it used to but my plan is to change the way my brain reacts to porn. For example I´m listening to my Ipod while watching porn or I´m sitting next to the open window so that cold air is coming into the room. My aim is to be able to watch porn without going totally crazy. In the long run of course i want to live without porn. But in the short/medium term it might be helpful to try to change the way my brain reacts to porn. My hope is that the withdrawal symptoms get weaker as soon as my brain has learned to perceive porn in a different way.

Of course I know that it would be the best to just ignore porn but due to the severy withdrawal symptoms even after 18 months I am looking for new ways.

I would really appreciate to hear your opinion!

PS: English is not my mother tongue hopefully you still understand what i mean!

The recommended way is to replace porn with healthier activities like sports, hobbies, hanging out with friends, volunteering, etc. This will weaken the porn pathways in your brain and dramatically reduce your urges, while at the same time building new pathways for the new activities.

I'm not exactly sure how your method will work. Watching porn releases dopamine, even if you're not masturbating or orgasming. Eventually you will have to quit watching it so why not start as soon as possible?

The best way to deal with the withdrawal symptoms is with new activities that keep you moving and interacting with people. If you stay home alone then obviously the symptoms will be too much and you'll end up relapsing.

A journal can help a lot as well, I suggest you start one here: http://www.yourbrainrebalanced.com/index.php?board=2.0

You can tell us about your struggles there.

    1) You say you have severe withdrawal symptoms. What are they?

    2) All this time you didn't watch P, did you fantasize about it?

    3) Have you considered the posibillity that the root of your "symptoms" is not porn?

Maybe you should visit a doctor and have some tests if you haven't already.

Also, quitting porn doesn't mean that life will be all of the sudden happy and joyful and problems magically disappear. So, maybe if you are feeling sad all the time, for example, is because of some other stuff that happened to you.

I am in no way expert, just my thoughts. :)
